16. TANANAS, MAKWERU (6’00”) Gito Baloi/Steve Newman/ Ian Herman, (Xitanda Music), Desk Mix, DM, Marquee, 1992, DAT. This was a memorable performance & recording (despite the feedback) for a number of reasons. Firstly if ever a group took the stage by storm it was Steve Newman - acoustic spanish guitar, Gito Baloi, from Mozambique, 6 string bass & vocals & Ian Herman - wonder drummer. The amphitheatre stage could not withstand Ma nature’s calling & it also blew us away. With the bottom stage gone & the audience spontaneously forming a human chain to get the equipment from the amphitheatre up to the Marquee. The festival hardly skipped a beat & every booked act got to perform. With no sound checks bands had to just plug ‘n play & hope for the best. This TANANAS set was inspired & amazing, despite the hassles. Listen & you will see! |
