14. 14 SHABALALA, WAKE WAMBONA UMFUNDISI EPH ETHE IPIKI
(You Don’t see The Preacher carrying a Pick) (3’55”)

14 Shabalala, (3rd Ear Music), Desk Mix, NR, Amphitheatre, 1997, DAT.

From Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal, 14 is a 6 time Splashy Fen Vet. He plays a 5-string self-tuned nylon guitar. His personalized & unique ‘maskanda’ style of singing & whistling enthralls - no matter if you can’t understand Zulu. Like all true Maskandi musicians (Troubadours) his songs reflect his personal observations & experience around his community. People in the village always politely comment that 14 only concentrates on his music & does nothing else! Have you ever seen a preacher with a pick he retorts? The preacher, like myself, has a gift to conduct the sermon - he doesn’t have to dig the hole. Need anybody say more? Theo Coetzee provides the outro over Pedro Espi-Sanchis playing the Umphe - a one string Xhosa & Zulu bow instrument played with a reed. A weapon of war (bow & arrow) that has been turned into an instrument of love & peace by musicians over ages & cultures?
